About the studio

Steluni started with four mats, a borrowed kettle and one very patient landlord

Steluni is a yoga studio on Grey Street in South Brisbane, founded in 2016 by Marisa Colquhoun and built around small classes, careful teaching and a room that stays quiet.

Our story

Nine years, three rooms, one stubborn idea

Marisa opened Steluni after a decade of teaching in gyms where the music was loud and the ceiling was low. She wanted the opposite of that.

The first space was a converted storage room above a hairdresser. Four mats, a borrowed kettle, and a landlord who agreed to a six-month lease because he liked the idea of something quiet happening above his shop. Within eight weeks there were waitlists. Within a year we had taken over the adjoining room and hired a second teacher.

In 2019 we moved down to the current space on Grey Street, which gave us two proper practice rooms, a change area with hot showers and the tea bench that everyone now lingers at after Sunday classes. The teaching has stayed deliberately small-scale. We still cap classes at sixteen, still run progressive four-week themes rather than random sequences, and still ask every teacher to hold additional training in functional anatomy before they take a class alone.

What we believe

Three things we will not compromise on

These aren't marketing lines. They are the reasons we turn down certain opportunities and keep the class caps where they are.

Someone has to be watching

A class of forty is a performance. A class of sixteen is a practice. We keep the numbers low so a teacher can see what your shoulder is doing and say something useful about it.

Sequences need a spine

Every block runs across four weeks with a theme. Week one builds the foundation, week four lands the peak. Nobody arrives on a Monday to find the teacher improvising their way through.

The room stays quiet

No mirrors, no shouting, no competing with a nightclub playlist. You come here to think clearly, and the studio is built to protect that hour.

How we got here

A timeline, honestly told

Not every year was a triumph. There was a flood in 2022 and a very quiet winter in 2020. Both are part of the story.

The storage room above the hairdresser

Four mats, one class a day, a landlord who liked the idea of quiet. Waitlists by week eight.

2018

Second room and second teacher

Daniel Okafor joined and the evening strong flows began. The first prenatal class ran in October that year.

2019

The move to Grey Street

Two practice rooms, a change area with hot showers, and the tea bench that the Sunday crowd still occupies.

2020

Online, then back together

A quiet winter teaching through a laptop screen. We kept every pass active rather than expiring them, which felt obvious at the time.

2022

Flooded, repaired, reopened

Forty centimetres of water through the back room. Eleven weeks closed, then a reopening class with sixty people crammed into a room built for thirty-two.

2024

Prenatal programme expanded

Hana Ueda came on as prenatal lead and the monthly partner workshop began. Six prenatal sessions now run every week.

The team

Twelve teachers, all of them here by choice

Every teacher at Steluni holds additional training in functional anatomy or prenatal safety before taking a solo class. Here are the four you'll meet most often.

Where the money goes

We're a small studio and we'd like to stay one

Every dollar of profit after rent, wages and insurance goes back into the room. New props, a better heating system, continuing education for the teachers. We're not opening a second location in Fortitude Valley, and we're not franchising. Growing carefully is the whole plan.
